Photography | One Fine Day
September 1, 1973 was a hot day in Manhattan, 97° by mid-afternoon. I left my hotel on West 57th Street and headed south on 9th Avenue armed with my trusty 1954 Leica M3 sporting a 1936 Elmar 35mm wide angle lens so small and flat it looked like merely a lens cap. My destination was Wall Street Camera in the financial district, a distance of 5 1/2 miles. I walked slowly and tried to observe all around me. Rarely did I appear to be taking pictures. I often shot from the hip. By mid-day I had slowly worked my way east, near Penn Station, and snaked my way toward Herald Square. I then meandered down Broadway, resting in Union Square, eventually reaching the financial district. I was almost there. Wall Street was just ahead. My feet were sore but I planned to ride the subway part of the way back.
September 1, 1973 was a Saturday. Wall Street Camera was closed for the Jewish Sabbath. Oy vey.
